DCA’s Indigenous Network

Australia has much to learn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and workplaces are no exception. At this event we will explore personal experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and truths from both a historical and modern perspective and how these untold truths can become invisible barriers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the workplace.
We are privileged to have Associate Professor Dr Lynette Riley, Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney School of Education and Social Work, join us to share her vast knowledge, awareness and personal experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and truths.
Dr Riley, a Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi woman and Indigenous education pioneer and expert has focused for more than 30 years on improving educational delivery for Aboriginal students and educating the wider public about Aboriginal people. She was a finalist for the 2021 NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year.
Dr Riley will provide insights on:
- Aboriginal Kinship systems
- Aboriginal social structures and how they differ from Western societies
- How cultural difference impacts upon Aboriginal people
- Indigenous self-determination and
- Truths around racism in the workplace.
Following this presentation, DCA Board Member Kate Russell will moderate a discussion with guest panellists including:
- Dr Siddharth Shirodkar, ANU Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Social Research & Methods and Sir Roland Wilson Research Scholar Alumni,
- Tanya Denning-Orman, Director of Indigenous Content at Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia, and
- Associate Professor Dr Lynette Riley, Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney School of Education and Social Work.

Anyone who wants to know more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s culture and their experiences in the workplace, including Educators, Legal practitioners, government personnel, and corporates who work with or for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Participation in DCA events is free for all member employees and a significant benefit of membership that we urge you to maximise.
